Trellised Tomatoes

This summer I have enjoyed eating tomatoes picked fresh off of the vine, without so much as adding salt. I have not been growing heirloom tomatoes, though I would love to, instead, I have been reaping a harvest of tomatoes grown indoors, around the pool.

The first plant, I purchased two years ago, at a large box store. I put it in a pot, and pushed it around my yard, in Maine, which has too many trees, to allow for needed sunshine, thus I think I reaped maybe one or two tiny tomatoes.  When the weather grew a bit colder, I brought it into the pool room, as the leaves outside were falling, allowing more sun to come through the glass doors.

For a few weeks it grew joyfully, and then I think it became too chilly in the room, and it started to die. Eventually, I cut it back, and put it in the garage, to reuse the pot and soil in the spring.

Much to my shock, after three weeks in the garage, the silly little plant began to put forward new growth!  There was no way I could let it freeze to death, in the garage, as the temperatures truly began to plummet, so I brought it back to the pool room, where it continued to grow.  Inspired by the first potted tomatoes, I bought a second, and put it at the other end of the room, near my Cuban oregano, that thrives in Maine. The first fruits were tiny, but with each crop the tomatoes grow bigger.

As my tomatoes have continued to grow, I have created various trellis systems to both support the vines, and give the maximum amount of exposure to the sun.

I do not know why these tomatoes are so delicious, but even Kate who is not particularly a fan of the poor tomatoes, has both enjoyed their taste and aroma, which should be bottled.  They truly taste like one thinks a tomato should taste – I am feeding them, but no toxins!

I have to say, since my days of growing produce in California, where everything flourished, this is the most satisfying vegetable I have help put on my table.
